Madam, – Every month, when the latest unemployment figures are published, we are told only of the number of people signing on. This is not a true reflection of the number of people who are unemployed since it ignores people who no longer qualify for social welfare benefits because of their partner’s or spouse’s earnings. Because of the number of households which had two incomes and now only have one, this must be a substantial figure.
Is there any way of knowing exactly how many people are actually unemployed, or are we who can’t sign on the new “disappeared”? – Yours, etc,
