Sir, - I am not in the habit of reading concert reviews, but I happened to see your critic's remarks about Grainne Mulvey's Diverge and Merge, performed in the National Concert Hall on February 6th.Ms Mulvey is castigated for experimenting with orchestral timbre. This is one of the most important things for a young composer to do, and I am still doing it at the age of 75. But my principal grievance about your critic's remarks is the sheer lack of any generosity of spirit in his review.Negative thoughts and actions proliferate everywhere, but artistic creators are among the affirmative, the generous, the warm, the courageous people of the world. For a young composer, having a major work performed by the National Symphony Orchestra in Dublin is an event to be celebrated, and we should be celebrating it with her. I found Diverge and Merge to be a beautiful and sensitive piece. I shall continue not to read music reviews, especially in The Irish Times. - Yours, etc.,James Wilson,Member of Aosdana),Wyvern,Killiney,Co Dublin.
