Sir, - Since smoke alarms save lives and new houses make record profits, I suggest a "priceless" gesture of goodwill. If builders installed a smoke alarm in every room of every new home, many tragedies could be averted for generations to come. In the longer term, legislation should require fire systems (not dependent on batteries) in all new houses.
