Sir, - While driving to work recently in Ranelagh village I was nearly involved in an accident which would have been completely due to the driver who drew up alongside my car and suddenly turned left, cutting straight across my bonnet without any signal. He was holding a phone to his ear and seemed to be enjoying a good laugh - at 8 a.m. in rush hour traffic! It is not possible to give 100 per cent concentration and talk on the phone at the same time, no matter who, or how important, you are.
I appeal to the Government to pass legislation making it illegal to use a mobile phone while driving, making it possible for the Irish Insurance Federation to recommend to individual insurance companies that they take the appropriate action. - Yours, etc.,
Pine Valley Park, Dublin 16.
