A chara, - Allow me to expand on the subject of Prof Henket's letter (October 16th). The old Dublin Airport terminal building is most certainly one of Ireland's greatest contributions to modern architecture and Aer Rianta should be kept from undertaking any building work detrimental to it.
Prof Henket's reminder that it was built as Ireland's gateway to the world draws attention to the current airport terminal and its subsidiary buildings. As a gateway to the world Dublin Airport is the central point where Ireland receives and parts with its visitors. However - and I am sure I am not alone in this sentiment - I cringe with shame every time I fly into or out of Dublin Airport. This is all the more so during the Christmas period when Aer Rianta exacerbates the amassment of poor design, pusillanimous concept and general inadequateness with inept seasonal decoration.
A visionary government would inaugurate a process by which Ireland's new gateway to and from the world be built, a new terminal building to the highest standards of architecture and design. From the point of view of architecture and design - and here I use the word in the holistic sense - almost everything within a one kilometre radius of Desmond Fitzgerald's old terminal building should be razed to the ground. - Is mise, Brendan MacReevy,
