Madam, - What a white elephant the €800 million Dublin Port Tunnel project is turning out to be.
Your Motoring supplement of September 7th now informs us that many fewer heavy goods vehicles will now use the tunnel than the 9,000 HGVs upon which the cost of the project was justified. Many will continue to travel through the city centre, simply because they will still be allowed to, while many others will also avoid the tunnel, to avoid in turn the impending major road-works on the M50 over the next four or five years.
Apparently, there is added confusion over three-axle, four-axle or five-axle trucks, concerning which may or may not be banned from the city centre. At this rate the only commercial vehicle likely to use the tunnel will be Del Boy in his three-wheeler Trotters' Independent Traders' Robin Reliant.
Only fools and horses indeed! - Yours, etc,
FINTAN CASSIDY, Annadale Crescent, Marino, Dublin 9.
