Madam, - Dr Garret FitzGerald's plea for a proper transport system for Dublin (January 19th) was a nice counterpoint to the news that the EU will soon restrict our carbon dioxide output to its 1990 level, to save the Government from its own foolishness - its failure to deal with the problem during the "seven years of plenty".
In the continued absence of the long-promised Dublin Transport Authority, it is left to independent commentators such as Dr FitzGerald to keep this huge challenge fresh in the public's mind, in the hope that voter anger will provoke some real action to tackle the global warming caused by our transport sector.
When the potential contractors have to point out that Metro North needs to be enlarged before it is built (the two Luas lines will soon carry more than the timid projections for Metro North), it begins to sound like another costly M50 fiasco. Even Irish Rail realises that the platforms for its inter-connector need to be 200 metres long, while Metro's current plan is for 90 metres only.
But else can we expect from a Government which has allowed itself to be distracted by Other Issues? - Yours, etc,
