Madam, – I wish to record my agreement with David McMahon’s point on the desirability of the placing of the underground transport hub at College Green (July 2nd). St Stephen’s Green will prove unbalanced in its traffic flows for all the reasons outlined.
On a complementary point, the necessary excavation and development work on College Green would provide the opportunity to route the road under-ground as well.
This proposal, a recommendation of the Metropolitan Streets Commission of the late-1980s, has recently re-emerged and could be accommodated in the excavations required to develop such an initiative.
Finally, his point on the reclamation of the former Houses of Parliament for the nation, is key to how we can develop it as Ireland’s best public space, to compete with London’s Trafalgar Square for grandeur. The Bank of Ireland should do the decent thing and repay us for our support and forbearance by donating this iconic building to the nation. And AIB could chip in by handing over their modern Irish art collection to the taxpayer to be housed there! – Yours, etc,
