Sir, – According to the Reuters report (World News, August 13th) more than 300 people are confirmed dead and more than 1,000 villages affected by the earthquakes in Iran.

In the same pages we read that Israel “may be considering a pre-emptive strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities this autumn.” Saturday’s Irish Times reported that “Israeli leaders want to attack Iran before US election”.

It is time this posturing is exposed for what it is: pure war-mongering by the only nuclear power in the Middle East, designed to impact on the US election. This is a dangerous stance that is supported by western governments, including the Irish Government, through the punishing sanctions against Iran.

Ireland should have nothing to do with these sanctions. We should instead express solidarity with the survivors of the Iranian earthquakes and offer whatever help we can at this time. – Yours, etc,
