Sir, - At a time when the country is reeling from an avalanche of scandals it is very disappointing to find that proposals for electoral reform are receiving such a hostile reception from some politicians.
It must surely be obvious at this stage that, if the erosion or public confidence is to be halted, widespread reform is essential. Apart from the electoral system, there must be an immediate ban on all political donations and radical measures to ensure an equitable distribution of the tax burden must be introduced forthwith.
History tells us that failure to reform can have the most disastrous consequences. Two prime examples are the Reformation and the French Revolution. - Yours, etc.,
M.D. Kennedy, Silchester Park, Glenageary, Co Dublin.
