Sir, - I noted in your business pages of October 17th the heading, "Run on embattled Euro".
Almost exactly two years ago, The Irish Times, in its propaganda run-up to the imposition on Ireland of the now notorious euro, printed, in its "Countdown to the euro" daily business feature, the following quotation from the French economist JeanPaul Fitoussi: "The single currency frees governments from subjugation to currency markets . . . the euro is appreciating in relation to all currencies in the world, including the dollar."
Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad. It is clear the gods of the "copy-book maxims" are intent on destroying the corrupt and corrupting mad design which is the so-called European Union, and in my view rightly so. I doubt that the ill-fated euro will survive to see itself in sole circulation by May 2nd 2002.
Any bets? - Yours, etc.,
Herb Meyer, Barna Road, Galway.
