Emigrants' right to vote

Madam, – It is my opinion that the country would be in a better position if emigrants got to have a say in who leads the country for the following simple reason: local politics and the cliched “cute hoorism” has for too long been a scourge of Irish politics.

People will vote for the politician they believe will best serve their interests. In Ireland, the problem is that this will often be of their immediate local interests. As emigrants have no local or constituency interests they are far more likely to vote for those politicians and parties who they believe will best serve the interests of the nation as a whole. – Yours, etc,
