Emigration once again

Madam, – I agree that emigration is as unacceptable now as it was in the past. (Editorial, September 23rd).

Madam, – I agree that emigration is as unacceptable now as it was in the past. (Editorial, September 23rd).

Emigration will be as much a characteristic of the 21st century as it was of the 20th century. Until a different future can be imagined, Ireland and countries like it will be hostages to the past.

There is little available evidence to indicate any new European paradigm in relation to emigration, be it voluntary, involuntary or forced.

However, it is hoped that a new spirit of tolerance will prevail in Europe in relation to migration and immigrants.

Immigrants in Ireland and Europe should be a reminder to us all of the plight of those who have to leave home and seek a life in an unfamiliar situation. – Yours, etc,
