Madam, - Why should anyone be surprised that murder and other violent crimes are on the increase (The Irish Times, January 29th)? After all, we accept murder and violence uncritically as entertainment in films, on TV and in video games.
Our uncritical acceptance of recreational violence simply validates an ever increasing culture of violence.
Isn't it time that we began to question the use of murder and violence as normal entertainment? A good beginning would be made if our TV stations could simply agree to show no violent death for entertainment purposes on just one day each year. UN World Day of Non-violence on October 2nd, Gandhi's birthday, would be a very suitable date. - Yours, etc,
TERRY GILLESPIE,
