Sir, - Why on earth does Vincent MacCarthy (November 4th) deem it "appropriate" that we should synchronise ourselves with European time for the millennium?
Our national time should remain synchronised with the British standard, which, for good reasons, and also historical ones of Anglo-French rivalry, seems most unlikely to adopt European time in the foreseeable future.
Time pedants are forever trying to tinker with prevalent conventions of time measurement, and generally to no good end, as clarified in my annual course, "The Nature of Time", at UCG.
"Let well enough alone!" is usually the best rule here. - Yours, etc.,
