'Face-to-face fundrasising'

Madam, - Brendan Keilthy's term "face-to-face fundraising" is a euphemism (April 14th). Chugging is a form of moral blackmail which is to be condemned. As a modest and quite regular contributor to a couple of established charities, I think it highly objectionable to be accosted on the street by chuggers from those same charities. I find myself being placed on the defensive and, in effect, having to justify my refusal to contribute forthwith by explaining that I am already a supporter of the charity in question.

The consequence of all this is that I have decided to cease to support any charity which engages in chugging, and to redirect what contributions I can make to those bodies whose fundraising activities are appropriately dignified.

I may add that the decision of the "industry" to set up a new professional organisation (sic), the Fundraising Forum for Direct Recruitment, impresses me not in the least. - Yours, etc.,

PATRICK FLANAGAN, Churchtown, Dublin 14.
