Madam, - With reference to Fintan O'Toole's article on inappropriate humour in your edition of October 30th, may I put in a good word for taxi-drivers?
The chattering classes seem to believe unquestioningly that taxi-drivers are some special repository of racist opinion. This is unfair. The vast majority of drivers I've encountered have been good-humoured people of diverse opinions and backgrounds. An increasing number are immigrants themselves.
Is there any evidence they are more likely to be racist than any other group of people in Ireland?
It is time that commentators stopped stereotyping them as bigots. - Yours, etc,
