Farmers and hill-walkers

Madam, - I refer to David Herman's letter of January 20th

Madam, - I refer to David Herman's letter of January 20th. Sligo farmers have stated that the current access problem stems from the publication of walking routes in the area without their knowledge or permission. David Herman is the author of the guide-book in question. He does not represent the views of all hill-walkers any more than Andy McSharry represents the views of all farmers.

The Mountaineering Council of Ireland represents more than 8,500 hill-walkers, climbers and ramblers. The MCI recognises access as a priority issue and believes that a consultative approach is the best way forward. This difficult issue will not be resolved through media sniping.

In light of the announcement that government funding is available towards a solution, the MCI looks forward to continuing to work with farmers and other concerned parties to ensure that there is reasonable access to the countryside with benefit to all involved. - Yours, etc.,

DECLAN O'KEEFFE, Chairman, Mountaineering Council of Ireland, Long Mile Road, Dublin 12.
