Madam, - When the land of Ireland was owned by a few landlords (many absentee) we had a situation where the "rights" of the individual owners were trampled on and their land redistributed to the people - at least some of the people.

Now we have a new set of owners who, despite massive subsidies from the PAYE sector, appear to be just as avaricious as the old ascendancy.

Ever with an eye on the main chance the Irish Farmers' Association, while ostensibly welcoming walkers, wants to be paid for letting us walk in our own country.

It has conveniently forgotten the dictum which Thomas Drummond, in opposing the excesses of the landlords, enunciated a century and a half ago: "Property has duties as well as its rights".
