Sir, - It was with incredulity and anger that I read your report (The Irish Times, January 7th) that the IFA is demanding yet more hand-outs for farmers - this time because of storm damage and slurry spills.
Have farmers ever heard of insurance? Well, why should they pay it when they know they can always stick their hands into the pockets of the PAYE taxpayers? As for the slurry, what exactly happened to the money these farmers received under the REPS scheme to prevent such spills?
The IFA should be told that no more money is coming its way. Farmers who are responsible for slurry pollution should be prosecuted by the EPA and be debarred from receiving further payments under the REPS scheme. - Yours, etc., Pat Corcoran,
Charles Street, Dublin 1.
