Madam, - The report in Tuesday's edition that Minister for Education Mary Hanafin will not be subsidising a new fee-paying secondary school is welcome news. I hope it's the thin edge of a very large wedge that will topple an unjust and inequitable system.
The vast majority of parents cannot afford to send their children to fee-paying schools but are expected, through their taxes, to subsidise them. These schools exercised their right to remain outside the "free" educational system. If they wish to remain there they should charge the full rate to those who attend and not expect the taxpayer to pick up the bill. - Yours, etc,
