Sir, - Fergus Finlay tells us with Jesuitical subtlety (October 25th) that he will never again buy The Irish Times. It is inconceivable, however, that he will never again read Dick Spring's copy.
On my first penniless day as a student there were three national broadsheets on sale, but only The Irish Times had the foresight to offer itself to students at half price. It was also the only one which took being a quality paper seriously; it had good writers and articles of all sorts and it was the only one which took more than 10 minutes to read. From that time I have been hooked.
Now, almost 30 years later, one of those other broadsheets has deservedly bitten the dust while The Irish Times has continuously improved. Your contents and sentiments may not always please me, but you can certainly count on my 85p. - Yours, etc.,
