Sir, - The debate on the leadership of Fine Gael focused primarily on the personality of Mr Bruton and on public perception rather than policy. Middle-ground voters, who look to this noble party as an alternative to the socially divisive policies of the FF/PD Coalition, do not seek an alternative version of Christian Democracy but a vibrant Liberal centre-based alternative.
The recent Canadian federal election demonstrated that a party espousing social and ecomonic liberal values can enjoy electoral success despite conservative and social democratic alternatives. Fine Gael must either seize this opportunity or face continued political obsolescence. Yours, etc.,
Lawrence S. Dowling, Caragh Drive, Limerick.
