Sir, - To dispel any fears your readers may have on reading about "super salmon" in your article "Researchers get many new fish to fry" (March 1st), we would like to clarify the situation.
The Irish Salmon Growers Association is completely opposed, as a matter of policy, to the use of transgenics in the production of our top quality farmed fish. The research being carried out by the National Diagnostics Centre in UCG is solely concerned with developing genetic techniques of sterilising farmed salmon, to prevent interbreeding with wild stocks.
We hope that this will allay any concerns of readers who may have wrongly interpreted, from the article, that any such transgenic experiments were being carried out or supported in Ireland.
Yours, etc.,
