Madam, - I would like to express my utter disgust at being denied access to the game between Shelbourne and Linfield last Saturday evening. The reason for this was nothing more than the fact that I had an Irish flag in my possession. The stewards at the gate gave me two options - "Throw the flag in the river", or "Give it to me".
I was so appalled by this response that I decided to watch the game on television. From the TV pictures it was clear that numerous Union Jacks and loyalist Ulster flags were present at the game.
I am a big fan of the idea of the cross-Border Setanta Cup, but at the same time, I am deeply disturbed by the lack of decency and respect shown by "our" officials.
Congratulations to Linfield on a superb victory. - Yours, etc,
KEVIN LYNAM, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14.
