Madam, - Niall Cassidy (June 16th) wonders "what the people of Dublin North think of Mr Sargent's decision to decline a ministerial post". Cllr Seán Ó hArgáin (June 21st) complains that Carlow/Kilkenny is "entering [ its] 17th year without a place at the Cabinet table".

Are we to assume that Messrs Cassidy and Ó hArgáin (and the many people who think like them) are really regretting that they won't have a Minister to "swing" things for their constituency? Are we still electing politicians to "get things" for us? This of course implies that such goodies will be got at the expense of other constituencies.

Are we still seeking to have gombeens in high office? - Yours, etc,

TONY McCOY O'GRADY, Grangebrook Close, Dublin 16.

Madam, - Will we still get to see John Gormley and Eamon Ryan walking to and from the Dáil on a regular basis, or will their peripatetic habits be seriously curtailed by the fact that the two gentlemen are now senior ministers in the new Government?

We all know they can talk the talk; but will they continue to walk the walk? - Yours, etc,

PAUL DELANEY, Dalkey, Co Dublin.

Madam, - Until the Greens arrived in government, we suffered dreadfully from weeks of blazing sun, with barely a drop of rain. But they promised to act on global warming, and they have kept their word. However, I wonder if they can ease up on the good work for a while, to give me time to build an ark? - Yours, etc,

MICHAEL O'MALLEY, Esker Cottages, Lucan, Co Dublin.
