Sir,- Further to Kevin Myers's appraisal of Francis Stuart's sojourn in Germany during World War II, Stuart, in his radio broadcasts from Berlin and Luxembourg, abstained from making anti-semitic remarks. However, the contents of his talks were highly political. He spoke about the endurance of the German soldier, compared Hitler favourably with Gandhi and Parnell and urged the Irish electorate in 1943 not to vote for Fine Gael. This resulted in an official protest by the Department of External Affairs. Mr Myers, with whom I would otherwise agree on the matter of Stuart, is wrong to suggest that Stuart went to Germany when she was master of Europe. In fact, Stuart arrived back in Berlin in late 1939 at a time when his choice of countries that had experienced defeat was rather limited. He did actually play with the thought of going to the Soviet Union at a later stage of the war. - Yours, etc., Andreas Roth,
