A chara, - To read Galway Corporation's admission that eight million gallons of untreated/ raw sewage are discharged into Galway Bay every day (February 5th) makes one's stomach turn, especially if one has to live there. Just to think that from January 1st 1992, a total of 14,600 million gallons of excrement went down Galway Bay makes one wonder how any of the beaches in Cois Fharraige ever got the "blue flag" from the European Community for clean water.
It appears that a clean environment for humans is far less important than for certain species of birds and other wild water life which would most certainly settle somewhere else in a short period of time. I am very much afraid that by Mutton island (from the clutches of "ruthless business interests") Galway Bay as a whole might never recover! - Yours etc.,
Carraroe,
Co Galway.
