Madam, - I refer to the article by Kathy Sheridan (Feb 12th) relating to the issue of gender identity disorder and to the forthcoming publication of the biography of Sara-Jane Cromwell.
Transgenderism or gender identity disorder is a serious issue for many people, not alone for those who are transgendered, but also for their families and friends.
Any positive discussion or publication of the issues which transgendered people have to face is to be welcomed.
However, in the course of the article, Ms Cromwell is quoted as having said that her reason for dissociating herself from TENI (Transgender Equality Network Ireland), was because of the alleged decision by TENI to include "all manner of fetish lifestyles which have nothing to do with GID".
This statement was misleading. Whilst Ms Cromwell is indeed correct that fetishism has nothing to do with gender identity disorder, what is misleading is her statement that TENI includes or supports such fetishistic lifestyles.
This simply is not true. TENI is a voluntary organisation set up solely for the purposes of supporting transgendered and transsexual people.
It is dedicated to promoting positive awareness about transgenderism (known medically as gender identity disorder) and to improving the conditions and advancing equality for all transgendered people in Ireland.
Its constitution clearly identifies it as such.
We strongly refute any suggestion that it is in any way associated with fetishism or any activity that might be so described.
In addition, TENI recognises and appreciates the work done by the lesbian and gay community to further the cause of transgender equality.- Yours, etc,
