Sir, - We were disturbed at the reportage of research (Irish Times, October 22nd) which we presented to a recent conference on gender equality in education. First, the headline "Girls neglected in co ed classes" is quite misleading. This a gross generalisation which the research would not warrant.

Secondly, quotations from the paper are highly selective. There is insufficient reference to the context of the study, i.e. that it forms part of a major programme of professional self development for student teachers, in which they observe, analyse and reflect upon their own interactions with pupils in a variety of different ways and settings, and themselves devise strategies for improving their professional practice. -Yours, etc.,
