Madam, – Ulick O’Connor (November 24th) suggests that the Dáil should copy the example of Winston Churchill’s National Government in 1941. However, in our situation, we are at war with over a decade of Fianna Fáil’s misgovernment. Including Fianna Fáil in any national government would be more Chamberlain than Churchill. – Yours, etc,
MARK McGRAIL,
Highland Avenue, Cabinteely,
Dublin 18.
A chara, – The legacy of this Government’s over-reliance on the property boom can be seen in towns, villages and cities the length and breadth of this island; in shabby and empty retail units, unfinished housing estates and, of course, the ever-lengthening dole queues.
If you consider that as minister for finance from 2004 to 2008 Brian Cowen failed miserably to regulate the country’s financial circumstances which relied so heavily on a creaking property bubble, it is hardly surprising that as Taoiseach he has managed to steer this nation in to its present unenviable state.
As he said to the citizens of this island on Monday, “There are occasions when the imperative of serving the national interest transcends other concerns . . .This is one such occasion” (Front page, November 23rd).
Would Mr Cowen now please do the decent and honourable thing: go now and take his cronies with him. – Is mise,
COLIN QUIGLEY,
Chairman,
INTO,
Athboy, Trim, Co Meath.
Madam, – This Fianna-Fáil-led Government has shamelessly ignored and disregarded the Irish people throughout their mismanagement of the banking crisis and the economy over the past few years. I suggest to everyone that we reciprocate by extending to them this same courtesy at the ballot box. – Yours, etc,
