Madam, - I hope Sara O'Sullivan (August 23rd) and others will reply with equal enthusiasm when they see examples of men and their abilities being stereotyped.
I say this because I've noticed a new syndrome develop over recent years. Those affected have a well-developed ability to spot remarks which suggest females are inferior to males in some way, often coupled with plenty of energy to complain about such points.
This could be a useful trait in bringing about a more egalitarian society except that those afflicted often seem to have a blind spot for any negative gender generalisations about men or, even if they don't have this visual problem, are rarely left with any desire to object to such remarks.
This syndrome may be contagious as those in the social sciences seem often to have it and its incidence is increasing. - Yours, etc.,
TOM KINDLON, Beechpark Lawn, Dublin 15.
