Sir, - Regarding the ongoing controversy about the Education Minister's plans for geography in the Junior Certificate syllabus, it surprises me that one of the politicians in Dail Eireann appreciate the debt they owe to their geographical education.

Every time there is an election they surely fall back on their fundamental knowledge of constituency geography: most politicians and election workers have an innate sense of the nooks and crannies of townlands and polling districts which they trawl and massage for votes. This is one of the assets of a thorough grounding in geography at school - a sense of place which makes elections and referenda exciting events for politicians and punters. Yours, etc.,
