Sir, - "Pig out, panic and purge" is the usual form during the annual Christmas holiday, and for many of us it can be a misery. However, a more thoughtful approach would help to ensure a merry time for the whole family.
However well you cope with turkey, cake and candles, the one thing that eventually gets burnt out, is your body: exhausted by marathon shopping trips, shrivelled from late-night revelry, and reeling from lack of sleep.
Your body can cope marvellously providing that you help it along with sensible forward planning. For instance, you can drink plenty of mineral water between the wines, beers and chasers. This takes the burden off your liver and kidneys, and will reduce the severity of your hangover.
Fresh fruit should be consumed at every opportunity; it is a rich supply of nutrients which will assist your body to properly digest the stodge.
Nuts, seeds and dried fruit can be a healthy alternative to chocolate and crisps. Cravings for sweet and savoury snacks are a sure sign that you are not getting enough vitamins and minerals. I recommend taking a good quality vitamin and mineral supplement.
Try to alternate between light meals and heavy; reduce your intake of fried foods and dairy products, as they tend to clog your nasal passages with thick mucus.
Also, take the time to mentally switch off during each day, in order to soothe your frayed nerves, and go for regular walks in any weather, to stop you from seizing up. Remember to wrap up well before you go.
