Madam, – The railway from Rosslare to Waterford is a national asset capable of bringing benefit to the south-east region through both passenger and freight movements. Yet Irish Rail is determined to close the line, oddly referring to a strategic railway as a “spur” and failing to acknowledge that it can, properly developed, add to the connectivity of the network as a whole, with large social and economic gains in an era of climate change.

The dearth of regional foresight in Irish Rail should be rectified. The infrastructure of the line should be transferred at once to the National Transport Authority. The authority could then invite passenger and freight train operating companies and shipping interests to develop traffic between Wexford, Rosslare Europort, Waterford and beyond. – Yours, etc,
