A chara, - Wicklow County Council cites dangerous road conditions as one of its reasons for the creation of a dual-carriageway through the Glen of the Downs. It is surprising, therefore, that it has not spent a few thousand pounds on adequately signposting the end of the present dual-carriageway as one enters the glen. As a regular commuter from Wicklow to Dublin, I am aware of only one small sign, equivalent in size to a yield sign and almost totally obscured by dust from the road. In contrast, all other points on the Wicklow road where dual-carriageways begin or end are served by large, luminous and at times, trilingual signs (English, French, German). Is the absence of proper signage as motorists enter the Glen of the Downs not incredibly convenient for the county council, which intends to spend £18 million in destroying one of the last beauty spots before motorists hit the gridlock of Dublin traffic?
Perhaps some legible signs advising drivers to slow down and enjoy the view would do more to alleviate road-rage and reduce speed than the prospect of getting to Dublin 30 seconds sooner. - Is mise, Gearoidin O'Dwyer,
