Sir, - Referring to recent correspondence about hold-ups on the N11, I see that the go ahead has now been given for widening the dual carriageway at the Glen of the Downs. This will inevitably lead to more, faster traffic speeding its way down towards the village of Ashford, where already continuous hold-ups occur. Widening the N11 at the Glen of the Downs will only make the present situation worse. According to the National Roads Authority, a "traffic control" system is to be put in place in Ashford and Wicklow County Council has been carrying out a study to discover the best way to do this. As a resident of Ashford, I await with interest its decision, and hope this will enable Ashford residents (especially pedestrians) to cross the road in a relatively safe manner, which is not the case even with the present volume of traffic. Surely it would have made more sense to complete the Ashford by-pass prior to the Glen of the Downs. Not doing so is just moving the problem further down the N11. - Yours, etc.,
Jean Essex,
Ashford, Co Wicklow.
