Sir, - Your report that (August 20th) 2,000 trees are to be felled in the Glen of the Downs. Some few years ago thousands were felled in a road widening scheme. A private club in the area was also reported to be felling trees.
As a nation, the Irish lack any sense of outrage, so I suppose the scheme will proceed. May I point out that the forest in the glen is one of the last vestiges of primeval forest left in Europe; and it is of as much importance to Europe as it should be to us. The EU should immediately put a preservation order on it. Left to the intellectual brain of an Irish County Council, even the area still remaining will be gone before any of us wakes up. - Yours, etc.,
Dermot C. Clarke,
Wilson Road, Mt. Merrion, Co. Dublin.
