Madam, - Tom Shiel's factual report on proposed gold mining in Co Mayo (Dec 3rd) confirms my worst fears.
It is astounding to learn that the Minister for Natural Resources has signalled his intention to grant prospecting licences to Mayo's Gold Mining company to facilitate mining lands and beaches. I understand this will initially involve land at Creggaunbaun, then scenic areas stretching from Roonagh to Killary and south of Croagh Patrick.
In l989 a well-organised campaign succeeded in stopping the desecration of Croagh Patrick by a mining company. The campaign was wholeheartedly supported by naturalist David Bellamy.
In an area which relies heavily on tourism for economic survival, it is unthinkable that mining may be allowed to destroy one of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe. Tourists come almost solely to view that unique coastline and its environs.
No doubt we will be given the usual platitudes and false assurances by the mining company and other interested parties, but the fact is gold mining will ultimately disrupt and deface the landscape. Money-spinning madness must not be allowed to effectively eliminate one of our most valuable assets. - Yours, etc,
LINDA CUSACK, Cross Avenue, Dún Laoghaire.
