Madam, - The "good news" story of last Tuesday was undoubtedly the completion of the Spire on O'Connell Street in Dublin. Having tracked its progress, my seven- and six-year-old children had a great interest in the television news.
However, the item was surrounded by reports concerning men with more than a passing interest in young children - the Garda sergeant looking for sex with a girl aged between 8 and 11; the priest who sexually abused young boys; the continuing fall-out from the Tim Allen case - all covered graphically and in detail.
How does one give age-appropriate responses to such horrors? - Yours, etc.,
