Sir, – Bernard Browne (February 21st) is absolutely correct about the need to rid our roads and streets of unnecessary clutter. I recently succeeded in getting my own local area management of Dublin City Council to agree a target of removing 50 unnecessary poles from each electoral area each year for the next four. Officials would have to report each quarter on the numbers removed.
If successfully implemented, this would see 400 poles removed up to the end of this term here in Dublin South East alone.
Achieving such a target is desirable and possible and repeated across the country it could have a very positive visual impact.
In addition, it might remind those responsible for wasting money on these very often vanity signage projects that it was not acceptable during the boom years and is certainly not acceptable now. – Yours, etc,
Cllr DERMOT LACEY,
Donnybrook,
Dublin 4.
