Sir, - Mr Haughey appears to have been fortunate in his choice of bankers. Prior to the amalgamation which took place in Irish banking, I was employed in one of the then six well-known banks. In accordance with the rules of that bank my account was maintained at the branch where I worked. On one occasion, when going on my annual holidays, I withdrew the entire balance, completely overlooking the fact that I had recently acquired a new cheque book.
On my return from leave, I was confronted by an irate manager, who pointed out in stern tones that my account was overdrawn to the extent of four shillings and two pence - approximately 20p in today's currency - this being the stamp duty then pertaining on a 25-cheque book. The manager immediately relieved me of the said cheque book, which he continued to hold until payment of my monthly salary restored the account to credit once more. Poor me! Lucky Charlie! - Yours, etc.,
Mrs Berry Kavanagh, Northcliff Heights, Skerries, Co Dublin.
