Sir, - AIB plc wrote off £500,000 of a £1 million advance to Charles Haughey. The bank was only generous, for whatever reason, to the tune of £300,000 approximately, as the Irish taxpayer will have effectively funded the remainder, since the bank's tax liability will have been reduced by the write-off. For my possible future use, would your Financial Editor supply a list of criteria that banks use to decide on debt write-off where there are assets sufficient to cover the debt. - Yours, etc.,
Elizabeth Walsh,
Tramore, Co Waterford.
