Madam, - On holiday last week in Ireland I was appalled to witness several large HGV lorries with long heavy trailers passing through the towns of Thomastown and Inistioge in Co Kilkenny. Apart from the considerable inconvenience caused to residents of these two towns, I understand that the beautiful 10-arch stone bridge in Inistioge is now at serious risk of severe damage on account of this transport.

I would appeal to the Irish Roads Authority or whomsoever has responsibility for heritage structures in Ireland to urgently direct such traffic on to the alternative route which can only add minutes to their journey. - Yours, etc,
