Madam, - Eileen Battersby writes (July 28th) that An Post's choice of round towers to commemorate the National Monuments Act is "the first time a symbol celebrating the archaeological and architectural heritage has been featured".
In the 1980s there was a series of stamps featuring drawings, in the same pen-and-ink style, of a range of structures, including churches (in Glendalough, Cashel and, I think, Cork), Norman castles, the Marino Casino and the Botanic Gardens glasshouse. The stamps didn't identify the buildings, the artist or the purpose of the series (could it have been the 50th anniversary of the Act?), but that is no reason why they should have been overlooked in the material provided to Ms Battersby about the new series.
Has An Post no institutional memory left in these commercialised days? - Yours, etc,
MICHAEL DRURY,
