Madam, - I noted with great sadness in The Irish Timesof January 13th the deteriorating condition of a very fine house, Vernon Mount in Douglas, Co Cork.
It would be a great kindness to Ireland if the owners, VM Restorations Ltd, would hand this house and lands over to Cork County Council in exchange for alternative land to develop and build on.
I believe Rathfarnham Castle and some land was saved by a similar exchange agreement some years ago.
I hope the Irish Georgian Society will succeed in having this house listed as part of the world's 100 most endangered sites, which hopefully will lead to it being saved and restored for the public good. - Yours, etc,
