Madam, - I note with interest that Ivana Bacik has moved from it being wrong to say she was "in favour of promotion of abortion" (see her letter of June 27th rejecting my claim that such was the case) to a full blown campaign to have abortion introduced in Ireland.
I strongly object to her being referred to as a liberal - the right to life is the most basic and anyone denying it is not liberal. It is such a pity that her undoubted talents are not addressing the basic concerns of women and men instead of promulgating the myth that women want abortion. This is a huge business involving vast profits and the ultimate in the exploitation of women at their most vulnerable. - Yours, etc,
Mrs MARY STEWART, Ardeskin, Donegal Town.
Madam, - May I congratulate the Irish Family Planning Association on its decision to seek a legal right to abortion in Ireland (The Irish Times, August 10th)?
As Ivana Bacik reminded us on RTÉ's Morning Ireland programme, over 100,000 women have sought abortions outside this State since 1990.
This route is neither safe nor satisfactory, other than providing a small amount of anonymity. It does not enable proper pre-natal care neither does it make post-natal care and counselling if required easily accessible.
I trust the IFPA will be successful in achieving freely available abortion up to 26 weeks with the full medical back-up that is necessary. - Yours, etc,
KEITH CARGILL, Drinagh, Ennistymon, Co Clare.
