Immigration and racism

Sir, - It was refreshing to read John Waters's column "Liberalism, not racism poses the real danger" (Opinion, March 26th).

It's not before time that someone in the media had the integrity to ask some honest and searching questions regarding these problems. I think he hits the nail on the head when he says that immigration is essentially an economic phenomenon and, as such, should be subject to economic analysis.

It is of the utmost importance that we deal with this issue in an intelligent and open manner and do not allow ourselves to be diverted by the so-called "liberal left". Their tactic of calling everyone who disagrees with them "racist" should not prevent us from speaking out where necessary; their form of invented racism should not deter us from honest and open debate.

It is not good for democracy when everyone sings from the same hymn sheet. - Yours, etc.
