Madam, – My son and I are attempting to compile a series of interviews with veterans of the second World War, he in Germany, I in Ireland.

This production will be different, hopefully, to any that have gone before in that we are trying to find out from those who fought on both sides not just what combat was like, but also how they readjusted to civilian life after such traumatic events and what kind of a welcome home they received. Irishmen coming back to certain parts of Ireland after their service in the British army, especially, may have found this transition particularly difficult. Many never returned, and for a variety of reasons.

Some of my own uncles found themselves in this position. Unfortunately they are dead now. All I have are photos. I didn’t interview them in time.

But I would dearly love to hear from readers who served, and are proud to have served, during that war, and who might be willing to speak to me. I can be contacted at the address below or at info@eddielenihan.ie. – Yours, etc,
