Sir, - I would like to respond to R. Nesbitt (September 26th), who makes the excellent point that handicapped people have serious access problems to public buildings, restaurants, etc.I am sure Mr Nesbitt and readers will realise that Keep Ireland Open's remit is necessarily a narrow one and that we must stick to our brief of making the countryside accessible. In fact, the Ramblers in England have just begun a campaign to provide wheelchair access to public footpaths and bridle paths and we intend to address this matter here.As an aside, as a member of Dail Eireann I raised the issue with the then Taoiseach and I am pleased to say that most public areas in Leinster House are now accessible to wheelchair users. - Yours, etc.,From Roger GarlandKeep Ireland Open, 43 Butterfield Drive, Dublin 14.
